Very Berry Strawberry

Shiny strawbsThis year has been fantastic for Strawbs 😀 We’ve got two beds packed full of them (you can never have too many!) We’re so surprised at how well they have done.  In the past couple of years we’ve lost most of the crop to mould and some very hungry slugs! 😦  I think the hot, dry weather has helped us.  I’ve been down to the lottie most evenings to pick them.  We’ve had them with ice cream, in G&T and just on their own (a nice snack when your working hard on the allotment).  A couple of weekends ago, we went down in the evening to water the plot and to see how many had ripened since the last picking… 😀Digging for strawbs

We picked over 1kg, which I have to say is pretty amazing for us. Plump, sweet, juicy strawberries.  For some reason, the pesky slugs seem to go for the biggest ones (grrr!) but even so I managed to pick at least 5 monsters that hadn’t been munched on 🙂A basket of Strawberries

Now I do love my strawberries, but I think we’d turn into one if we ate the lot… what to do with them?… strawberry jam research was on the cards!

Strawbs are great in a G&T

Strawbs add a real taste of summer to your G&T 😀

What do you do with your strawberries? Have you got any recipes you’d like to share with me?

  1. Yes ‘nearly’ strawberry jam which has an intense flavour and can be frozen. 350g strawbs, 75g granulated sugar, juice 1/2 lemon. Chop strawberries put in saucepan with sugar and lemon stir gently till sugar dissolves. Mash the fruit so part puree, part whole fruit and let gently simmer to reduce (20-25 minutes) then leave to cool. It won’t set and will keep in the fridge for 5 days but can be frozen and used over ice-cream.
